EVSS - Bridging the Gap Between Magnetic Starters and VFD's
Enclosed Variable Speed Starters (EVSS) are a brand-new product Palmer DCS is launching, and we’re excited about what it can do. If you’re looking to reduce your energy consumption or increase your motor uptime using a product with simple setup, that also gives you the advanced capabilities of a variable frequency drive, we think you’ll be excited about them too.
With that in mind, we want to take a few minutes to familiarize you with the features and benefits of the EVSS.
What is EVSS?
Many of you are familiar with motor starters and variable frequency drives (VFDs). They represent both ends of the motor control spectrum. Motor starters offer simplicity; they’re affordable and easy to install, but they’re limited to basic motor control. VFDs provide enhanced levels of motor control but are much more expensive than motor starters and aren’t practical for every application.
The EVSS features Eaton’s PowerXL™ DE1 Variable Speed Starter and bridges the gap between a basic motor starter and a variable frequency drive.
The EVSS combines the best of both devices: the simplicity of a motor starter with the advanced capabilities of a variable frequency drive. Now, it’s much more feasible to use advanced motor controls for simple applications, e.g. pumps and fans, thus helping you reduce your energy consumption.
The “E” in EVSS stands for “Enclosed” and that’s the value Palmer DCS has added. We designed the EVSS to be available in either NEMA Type 1 or NEMA Type 4 enclosures. This offering will cover most indoor and outdoor applications.
Benefits of EVSS
The EVSS is available in two product ranges: 230V single phase in, three phase out 1/3 HP to 3 HP and 460V three phase in three phase out. If required, the 230V can be wired at the factory to be three phase in and three phase out.
Enclosing the Eaton PowerXL™ DE1 offers enhanced motor protection from fusing, a step-down transformer to support switches, relays and pilot lights, an internal terminal strip for easy field wiring and an external HOA for safe maintenance and troubleshooting. Eaton has built a lot a value into the DE1. It delivers the functionality of a VFD to simple applications that would normally use a starter. The trip-free design ensures maximum machine up-time by automatically preventing tripping in borderline situations.
In addition, the out-of-box commissioning requires no specialized knowledge of drives to install or start-up the EVSS. Parameters like ramp time, motor protection and control terminal functions can easily be set using the plug-in configuration module and a screwdriver. For the more VFD-savvy technicians, you have full integration with Eaton SmartWire DT communication system and PowerXL™ drivesConnect.
Best of all, in the right application, the EVSS is eligible for drive rebates from XCEL energy.
Palmer DCS has been supporting the electrical control industries for almost 50 years. We’ve seen all sorts of new products and technology in that time. When we get excited about a new innovation, it means something. And we’re excited about the EVSS. Check out our product page to see some of the options available to you and learn more, because we think you’ll be excited, too.
